Gardening requires more knowledge of an unlimited amount of different plant life. There are perennials, annuals, bi annuals, etc. Each species will be at peak performance under various conditions. We must consider light conditions, watering needs, space, growth pattern, companion planting, when the plant will flower, season care, toxicity, pest identification and abatement, planting medium - and the list goes on. We also must be careful we do not accidentally remove a family heirloom perennial.

Basic maintenance of an existing garden is weeding. One must be able to identify the difference between a weed and a wanted garden specimen. Once the weed is identified, it must be pulled out by the roots – different tools are designed to remove all of the root system. This takes skill – especially with larger, mature weeds.

Add-ons to basic gardening might include trimming smaller hedges & bushes, thinning perennials, edging the garden, removing an entire species or adding a new specimen.
